Thinking of Moving in 2026? What NZ Teachers Need to Know
Lauren H • August 4, 2025

If you're a New Zealand-trained teacher thinking about making the move across the ditch in 2026, now is the time to start planning. Australian schools are actively seeking great educators - and with the right preparation, your move can be smooth, rewarding, and career-defining.

Here’s what you need to know to get started:

1. There’s Strong Demand for NZ-Trained Teachers

From metro hubs like Sydney and Melbourne to growing regional communities in Queensland and the Northern Territory, schools are actively recruiting experienced and early-career teachers from New Zealand. Your training is highly regarded - and your experience is a great match for the Australian curriculum.

HARKE works with Independent, Catholic, and Government schools across Australia - and many welcome applications from New Zealand-trained teachers.

2. The 2026 Hiring Cycle Starts Soon

While it might feel early, Term 3 and Term 4 are when most 2026 roles are advertised and filled. Interviews for January starts often happen as early as September. Registering your interest now means you’ll be ready when opportunities go live.

Most schools like to lock in hires before the December break - especially for relocation roles.

3. You’ll Need to Sort Registration

All states and territories in Australia require teacher registration. While it’s a relatively smooth process for NZ-trained teachers, each state has different timelines and requirements. Similarly, while many Kiwis qualify for automatic work rights under the Trans-Tasman agreement, it’s best to confirm your eligibility early.

Top Tip: Start the registration process at least 3–4 months ahead of your desired start date.

4. You Have More Options Than You Think

Australia’s school system is diverse. Whether you’re looking for a vibrant city-based Independent school or a supportive Catholic school in a regional town, there are roles to match your goals, lifestyle, and teaching strengths. The key is to work with a recruiter who knows both systems well.

HARKE Supports NZ Teachers Every Step of the Way
