Grads: How to Make the Most of Your Term 3 Placement
Term 3 placements are more than just a uni requirement - they’re your launchpad into a teaching career. Whether it’s your first placement or your final one before graduation, the relationships, routines and reflections you build now will shape your path forward.
Here are five ways to make the most of your placement this term:
1. Be Proactive - Not Just Prepared
Yes, know your content. Yes, arrive on time. But also look for small ways to contribute beyond the minimum. Volunteer to assist with a lunchtime club. Offer to run a warm-up. Help prep resources. Initiative is noticed - and remembered.
Tip: Ask your supervising teacher, “Is there anything extra I can take off your plate today?”
2. Ask Questions (Even the Basic Ones)
You’re not expected to know everything. What matters is your willingness to learn. From behaviour management strategies to how the photocopier works - asking thoughtful questions shows reflection, curiosity and care.
Every question helps you become the teacher you’re aiming to be.
3. Seek and Apply Feedback
Don’t wait for formal reviews - seek feedback early and often. After a lesson, ask what worked well and what could improve. Then apply it the very next time. Showing growth in real time demonstrates maturity and professional commitment.
4. Build Relationships with the Whole School
From admin to aides, your placement is a chance to learn how a whole school community works. Take time to chat, connect, and show appreciation to everyone who keeps the school running. These connections matter - and they build your confidence, too.
5. Think Beyond the Classroom
As you settle into your role, reflect on the kind of teacher you want to become. What values do you want to bring into your future classroom? What kind of school culture inspires you? Use this placement to refine your direction.
