Lead Teacher - Alternative Education

Location:  Rural QLD (Guld Country region)
Salary:  Up to $125k + Salary Packaging
Contract: Full-Time, Ongoing
Start: Term 2, 2026

About the Role

A unique opportunity has become available for an experienced and purpose-driven Lead Teacher to oversee a newly established alternative education program.

This developing program currently supports a small cohort of students (4 on roll) and operates with a dedicated team of 2 Teacher Aides and 1 Teacher. As Lead Teacher, you will oversee daily operations, provide instructional leadership, and drive the next phase of growth and impact.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you will:

  • Deliver and oversee a tailored alternative education program for young people engaged with the youth justice system

  • Lead and mentor a small multidisciplinary team (2 TAs and 1 Teacher)

  • Drive literacy and numeracy outcomes through differentiated, evidence-informed practice

  • Strengthen operational partnerships with youth justice, community services and local stakeholders

  • Embed culturally responsive practice, particularly in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and families

  • Support the continued growth and development of this emerging school program

This is a rare opportunity to shape a program from the ground up while working within a well-supported and values-driven organisational framework.

About the Organisation

This program operates in partnership with one of Australia’s leading child rights organisations, part of a national network committed to ensuring children and young people are safe, supported, and able to thrive.

The broader education partner delivers alternative education programs to hundreds of young people across Queensland who have disengaged or are at risk of disengaging from mainstream schooling due to complex barriers.

The Mount Isa program provides a wraparound model of support, integrating specialist teachers, teacher aides, youth specialists and family support staff to ensure students receive both educational and wellbeing support in a structured, relational environment.

Added Benefits

  • Opportunity to lead a developing, high-impact alternative education program

  • Strong organisational backing from established education and child advocacy partners

  • Salary packaging (PBI) to increase take-home pay

  • Employee Assistance Program

  • Fitness Passport access

  • Professional development and leadership growth opportunities

  • Supportive, mission-driven culture

  • Relocation assistance may be available by negotiation

Ideal Candidate

  • Strong background in delivering literacy and numeracy programs

  • Strong understanding of Indigenous education

  • Experience supporting young people involved in youth justice or with complex needs

  • Confident leading small teams and building strong community partnerships

Must-Have Requirements

  • Current Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) registration (or eligibility to obtain)

  • Full Australian working rights

  • Willingness to undergo relevant safeguarding checks, including Working With Children Check

If you are an experienced educator ready to lead with purpose and make a measurable impact in a small but powerful learning community, we would love to speak with you.
