About the Role

The Deputy Head of Secondary is a senior leadership position combining approximately 0.5 FTE teaching with 0.5 FTE leadership responsibilities. The school can be flexible around teaching methods, allowing the classroom component to reflect the successful candidate’s subject strengths.

The Deputy Head will lead and support the Heads of House, House Mentors, Transition Coordinator and International Student Coordinator, while deputising for the Head of Secondary when required. The position has a strong focus on student wellbeing, pastoral leadership, staff development and effective day-to-day Secondary School operations.

Skills and Responsibilities

  • Lead student wellbeing and the House system, supporting Heads of House, House Mentors and relevant coordinators.

  • Develop and support staff while contributing to recruitment, onboarding and effective Secondary School operations.

  • Oversee and contribute to key processes including enrolments, camps, assemblies, reporting and assessment.

  • Build strong relationships with students, parents and staff, ensuring clear communication and effective engagement.

  • Work closely with the Head of Secondary and wider leadership team, deputising when required and contributing to strategic and operational priorities.

Requirements

  • Current VIT registration or eligibility for registration

  • Relevant secondary teaching qualifications and demonstrated school leadership experience

  • Strong experience in student wellbeing, pastoral care and staff leadership

  • Ability to effectively lead teams and manage multiple operational and educational priorities

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills across students, staff and families

  • Full Australian working rights

  • Two professional referees and completion of HARKE’s safeguarding onboarding
